2011 - 03 Spring - A parable of Easter

Spring – A Parable of Easter.

New buds! Green shoots pushing through the earth! That which was seemingly dead springing to newness of life! I love sunny early Spring days!

Five year old Danny Evans came to learn the wonder of life through potatoes! One day he was with his grandfather, Alan, in his allotment.

Alan had a large sack of potatoes and he was dropping them, one by one, into trenches which he had prepared. Then he turned the soil over, covering the potatoes, and trod the earth down firmly all around them.

“Why do you bury all those lovely potatoes?” asked Danny.

Alan tapped the side of his nose and looked mysterious. “Just wait for a few weeks and you will see.”

Danny went every few days to the allotment to check. First he saw what he thought were weeds growing all over the ground, and then they began to die off. One day his grandfather called Danny who came running. Alan took a large fork and dug up each plant. To Danny’s amazement, instead of there just being one dead potato in each spot there were many.

The potatoes had died, come to life and multiplied!

When the ground had been cleared, Danny asked if he could use the empty plot and then hurried indoors. He came out with some boxes. They contained small white round balls. Then he put them in holes all over the ground and covered them up and trod the earth firmly down all around them. Alan said nothing! Danny’s father was a professional golfer, and Danny thought that his father would be pleased to have his golf balls multiplied for him. He waited and watched for weeks, but nothing happened! At last he took a little trowel and dug them up.

“These balls don’t work,” he said. Alan then explained that there were live things and dead things.

The live things could produce other live things like themselves. But dead things could not produce themselves!

And here in this story is the great Easter message!

Because Adam sinned, death comes to every one. But because Jesus lived a sinless life, died, and rose from the dead so shall everyone who identifies with Him. The Bible promises that “As in Adam all die, even so in Jesus Christ shall all be made alive.”

The Bible also promises that all who put their trust in Him shall not only have everlasting life but shall be where He is and be like Him.

Rev. Stan Vart

Prayer.  Lord Jesus, we praise You that in Springtime You remind us in bud and shoot that that which was dead can come to newness of life. We thank You that You have overcome sin and death and opened the way to everlasting  life for all who believe.
